Preparation steps

1.
Cover the bottom of a large saucepan with 1 cm water and stir in the sugar until dissolved.
2.
Add the rest of the ingredients and cook, covered, over a very low heat for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Ensure the pan doesn't dry out by adding a little more water if necessary.
3.
Remove from the heat and allow to cool a little before serving warm.
