Suggested variations; you can use other types of plums such as Victoria, in which case use only 12 plums for the above recipe.
Wash the plums carefully.
In a bowl mix the orange juice together with the brown sugar, cinnamon, star anise, ground nutmeg and crushed cardamom.
Place the plums in the slow cooker together with the sugar, juice and spice mix.
Add the orange peel slice and vanilla pod. Cook on a low setting for 3-4 hours.
Enjoy with cream as an optional extra.
