Preparation steps

1.

Mix the flour with the powdered sugar and the lemon zest, creating a mound on the work surface. Pour the beaten egg in the middle and spread chopped butter around. Chop thoroughly with a knife, then knead with your hands into a firm dough. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 180°C (approximately 350°F). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

2.

Roll out the dough 3 - 4 mm (approximately 1/4 inch) thick on a floured work surface. Cut out stars of different sizes and place on the baking sheet. Use a toothpick to prick a small hole in each for hanging in the cookies. Bake about 10 minutes until golden. Remove from the oven and transfer cookies to a wire rack and let cool completely. Spread lightly with jam, sprinkle with coarse sugar and leave to set. Using a ribbon thread 1 - 2 cookies of different sizes through the holes and tie together. Use the cookies either as decoration or as an edible treat.
