- 2 Tbsps butter
- 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
- 2 Tbsps all-purpose flour
- 6 cups stewing Beef (Chuck)
- 2 sticks Celery (sliced)
- 2 large carrots (peeled and finely diced)
- 3 cups Turnip (peeled and cubed)
- 3 cups floury potatoes (peeled and cubed)
- 1 cup Ale
- 3 cups Beef stock
- 1 Broccoli (prepared into florets)
- salt
- freshly ground peppers

Preparation steps
1.
Heat the butter and oil in a large casserole dish set over a moderate heat until hot.
2.
Sprinkle the flour over the beef and season with salt and pepper. Seal in the dish, in batches, until golden.
3.
Reduce the heat slightly and stir in the vegetables. Cover with the ale and stock, cooking until simmering.
4.
Pour into a slow cooker. Cover with a lid and cook on a low setting for 6 hours until the beef and vegetables are tender.
5.
Steam the broccoli in a steaming basket set over a half-filled saucepan of simmering water. Cook for 5-6 minutes until tender.
6.
Season the stew with salt and pepper, serving with the steamed broccoli on the side.
