Russian Beef Stew
Peel potatoes and cut into small cubes. Peel onion, halve and cut into small cubes. Peel carrot and grate coarsely. Heat butter in a large saucepan and brown meat on all sides. Add potatoes, carrot and onion and saute briefly. Add vodka and broth.
Simmer, covered, for about 1 hour on low heat or until vegetables are falling apart and meat is very tender. Rinse and slice tomatoes. Drain olives and cut gherkins into small cubes. Add tomatoes, olives and gherkins to the pan and season with salt, pepper and paprika. If desired, serve with fresh pies.
