12 slices sandwich white bread
6 slices cooked ham
12 Swiss cheese
½ cup butter (softened, plus 1 tbsp extra for frying)

Preparation steps

1.
Butter the slices of bread. Place a slice of cheese on 6 of the pieces of bread; cover with a slice of ham then another piece of cheese. Top each one with another slice of buttered bread.
2.
Melt a knob of butter in a frying pan. Place 2 Croque Monsieur in the pan and cook on a low heat for 5-6 minutes each side. The bread should be golden and the cheese melted.
3.
Continue with the other sandwiches, adding a little more butter to the pan each time.
4.
Serve hot with a green salad.
