Preparation steps

Butter bread slices on both sides. Using a small glass or cookie cutter, cut a 2-inch hole in the middle of each slice of bread.

Preheat griddle over medium heat. Place buttered bread on griddle and cook until golden brown. Turn and drop a dab of butter into the center of the bread, Crack the egg into a small bowl, gently pour the egg into the hole. Repeat the process with the remaining slices of bread. Season with salt and pepper. Finish cooking the eggs to your preferred taste (sunny side up, over easy, over medium, etc. ). The bread "centers" can be grilled also.
