Nutritional values

The dried apple rings are a healthy alternative to conventional sweets, as they contain the natural fruit sweetness and no added sugar. Moreover, the minerals are hardly affected by the drying process, on the contrary. Due to the dehydration, e.g. iron, potassium and the digestive fibres are available in concentrated form. Only the heat-sensitive vitamin C is partially broken down (up to 80%), as are the water-soluble vitamins of the B group, above all B1.

Try the dried apple rings as a delicious snack for in between meals, in muesli and porridges.

Preparation steps

1.

Mix 750 ml (approximately 3 cups) water with the salt and lemon juice. Rinse the apples one by one. Dry the peel, cut out the core and cut into 5 mm thick rings. Place the rings into the lemon juice solution immediately (so they do not discolor). Soak the apples for 10 minutes in the solution.

2.

Lift the rings from the solution and drain on paper towel. Pat dry.

3.

Place the rings on a double-layer cheesecloth side by side. Place the cheesecloth between a cooling rack and the cooking grate.

4.

Place the wire rack and cooking grate with the apple rings in a cold oven. Set the oven to 50°C (approximately 125°F). Once the temperature has been reached, leave the oven door ajar (propped with a wooden spoon). Increase the temperature to 60°C (approximately 150°F). Let the apple rings dry for about 5 hours, keeping the oven door ajar. Remove when the apples are dry, but still soft and pliable. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before serving.
