Preparation steps

1.

Dissolve the yeast and a pinch of sugar in some of the warm water in a bowl. Stir in the flour, remaining water, icing sugar, 100 grams (approximately 1/2 cup) of the lard and the egg until thoroughly combined. The mixture should begin to bubble and feel soft and loose.

2.

Rest in a warm place, covered, for 30 minutes.

3.

Melt the remaining lard in a saucepan set over low heat.

4.

Knead the dough on a lightly floured work surface. Shape the dough into a log and cut into 12 equal-sized pieces.

5.

Roll each piece into a 15 x 25 cm (approximately 6 x 10 inch) log. Drizzle with the melted lard.

6.

Roll the logs on 1 end so it is thinner and looks like a snail. Place the snails on a floured baking sheet and rest for 20 minutes. Brush with water. Bake in a 200°C (approximately 390°F) oven for 30 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm.

7.

Can also shape the dough into 1 spiral.
