- For the cake
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp Baking powder
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 cup brown sugar (scant)
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup milk
- For the sauce
- 1 cup Maple syrup
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup butter

Preparation steps
1.
Heat the oven to 180°C (160°C in a fan oven), 375°F, gas 5. Grease the baking tin.

Mix the flour with the baking powder. Beat the butter and sugar together until fluffy. Stir in the egg, a pinch of salt and the vanilla essence. Gradually add the flour and milk in alternation, stirring after each addition. Tip into the tin and smooth flat.

For the sauce, mix the syrup, sugar and butter with 250 ml boiling water. Bring to the boil and boil for around 1 minute. Pour over the cake mixture and bake for 40-45 minutes.
4.
Cut the cake into pieces and serve on plates with a little of the sauce. The cake goes well with whipped cream.
