- 6 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
- 1 tsp Baking powder
- 2 tsps Ginger powder
- 2 tsps ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp Mixed spice
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 cup butter
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- ⅞ cup Golden syrup
- ⅔ cup black Molasses (molasses)
- For the icing
- 5 cups powdered sugar
- 2 Tbsps lemon juice
- water

Preparation steps
1.
Heat the oven to 180°C (160° fan) 350°F gas 4. Line 2 large baking trays with non-stick baking paper.

Sift the flour, baking powder, spices and salt into a mixing bowl.

Melt the butter, sugar, syrup and treacle in a pan. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly.

Stir the butter mixture into the flour mixture and mix to a dough. Allow to stand for 5 minutes.

Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface about 1cm|1/2" thick. Cut out 4 hearts, re-rolling the trimmings if necessary.

Place on the baking trays and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden and cooked through. Cool on the baking trays for 10 minutes, then place on a wire rack to cool completely.
7.
For the icing: sift the icing sugar into a bowl and beat in the lemon juice. Beat in just enough water to give a smooth thick icing.
8.
Spoon into a piping bag and pipe around the outline of the hearts. pipe a filigree design on the hearts and sprinkle with sugar. Leave to set.
