Preparation steps

1.
In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light, fluffy and smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time and vanilla. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt and stir until well blended.
2.
Cover, and chill dough in the refrigerator for at least one hour or overnight.
3.
Preheat oven to 375º F.
4.
Divide dough. On a floured work surface, roll dough out to a 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into shapes with cookie cutter. Place cookies on an ungreased baking sheet 1-inch apart. Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until slightly brown. Transfer to wire rack to cool completely before decorating.
5.
For Frosting:
6.
In a large bowl, cream together confectioners' sugar, shortening, and butter until smooth. Using an electric mixer, slowly mix in the milk and vanilla, mixing until smooth and stiff (about 5 minutes). Add food coloring if desired. If using more than one color, divide the frosting into separate bowls. Frost cooled cookies and decorate with sugar crystals and dragees. Serve.
