Preparation steps
1.
Put the butter, sugar and treacle in a pan over a low heat. Stir until the butter and sugar have melted. Set aside for 10 minutes to cool slightly.
2.
Combine the butter mixture and eggs in a mixing bowl until smooth.
3.
Sift in the flour, spices and bicarbonate of soda and mix to a dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until smooth. Shape into a ball, wrap in cling film and chill for 1 hour.
4.
Heat the oven to 180°C (160° fan) 350°F gas 4. Line a large baking tray with non-stick baking paper.
5.
Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface about 5mm|1/4" thick. Use a small star-shaped cookie cutter to cut stars from the dough. Place on the baking tray, arranging the stars in a circle, overlapping slightly and gently pressing to seal, to form a wreath shape.
6.
Bake for about 20 minutes until golden. Cool completely on the baking tray.
7.
Sift a little icing sugar over the wreath. Thread a ribbon between the top and tie the ends in a bow to secure.
