- For the cupcakes
- ¾ cup butter
- ¾ cup caster sugar (superfine)
- 4 eggs (beaten)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 ¼ cups self-rising flour
- For the vanilla buttercream
- 0.333 cup butter
- 1 ¼ cups powdered sugar
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- To decorate
- powdered sugar
- small Candle

For the cupcakes: heat the oven to 180C,350F, gas 4. Place 10 paper cases in a bun tin.

Beat the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until soft and light.

Beat in the eggs, a little at at ime until well blended. Gently stir in the vanilla and flour until well mixed.

Spoon the mixture into the paper cases and bake for 20 minutes until golden and springy to the touch. Remove from the tin and cool on a wire rack.
5.
For the vanilla buttercream: beat the butter until soft. Sift in the confectioners' sugar and beat well until smooth. Stir in the vanilla.
6.
Spread the buttercream over the top of the cakes. Sift confectioners' sugar over the top of each cake. Place a candle in the centre of the cake.
