Many of the cleaning products available to us are filled with highly volatile chemicals. These chemicals are a leading contributor to indoor air pollution and can even cause headaches, eye & throat irritation, and make kids or pets sick.

Luckily, many of the things already sitting in your home pantry can be used as chemical-free cleaning products. The first step to making your own cleaning solutions is making sure you have the following items in your pantry:

Baking soda: Found in most kitchens as a product to leaven baked goods, baking soda is great for cleaning because it cuts grease, deodorizes, brightens surfaces and is effective at killing viruses.

Castile soap: Part of most natural cleaning products, from face wash and shampoo to degreaser and skin cleanser, castile soap is made from 100% plant oils (making it a great vegan soap too!) Castile soap is great for cutting grease, making it great for kitchen cleaning. Dr. Bronner’s is the most widely available brand, it can be found in a variety of scents in both the liquid and solid form.

Essential oils: To make your homemade cleaning products smell great, essential oils are a must. Some great ones to keep on hand are tea tree, mint, and lemon.

Lemon juice: It seems like the uses for lemons and lemon juice are never-ending, so it’s no surprise that they are part of natural household cleaning. You can use lemons to kill harmful mold and mildew, disinfect hard surfaces (like cutting boards), and cut grease.

Olive oil: Everyone’s favorite cooking oil is a great way to naturally polish and clean surfaces.

Vinegar: Gentle and acidic, vinegar is great for getting rid of stubborn soap scum and cutting grease in the kitchen. Just don’t use vinegar solutions on any stone countertops, as it can damage them.
