The pithy-sweet snack is the perfect remedy for that little hunger in between. Oats also contain a lot of soluble and insoluble fibre, which keeps the blood sugar level constant and counteracts constipation.

You can also prepare the muesli bars with a good vegetable margarine (80% fat - do not use low-fat varieties!) to reduce the cholesterol content.

8 ozs Fruit cereal (eg, muesli; without sugar)
2 ozs Oatmeal
1 oz butter
2 ozs Raw cane sugar
4 ozs liquid honey
1 tsp Apple juice
3 ozs Rosehip preserves

Preparation steps

1.

Mix fruit cereal and oat cereal.

2.

Melt butter in a skillet. Add sugar, honey and apple juice and bring to a boil while stirring. Cook over medium heat, stirring, for 2 minutes until mixture is smooth and golden.

Remove skillet from heat, stir in cereals and mix thoroughly.

4.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and cover with plastic wrap. Roll mixture out toward edges of baking sheet to about 25 x 20 x 1.5 cm (approximately 10 x 8 x 1/2 inches).

5.

Remove plastic wrap and let the mixture cool for at least 20 minutes.

6.

Heat preserves and spread on granola.

7.

Cut granola into bars and allow to dry overnight on a cutting board before serving.
