Beat the butter, sugar and the egg for around 10 min until creamy. Add the cinnamon, a pinch of cloves and cardamom, the lemon zest and the ground almonds and mix well.
Mix together the flour and the baking powder and knead into the butter mixture. Wrap the dough in cling film and chill for 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C in a fan oven), 400°F, gas 6. Line a baking tray with grease-proof paper and sprinkle with the slivered almonds.
Roll out the dough on a floured work surface approx. 5 mm thick and cut into strips approx. 1 cm wide and 7 cm long. Place on the prepared baking tray, press down firmly and bake for 10-15 min until golden.
Remove from the oven and leave to cool on a wire rack.
