Asparagus with Ham

Peel the asparagus, and remove the hard, woody ends. Fill a large pot 3 cm (approximately 1 1/4 inch) high with water. Add the sugar, salt, lemon juice, and butter to the water. Bring the water to a boil and add the asparagus. Cook for 8-12 minutes, until al dente (the cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of the asparagus).
Remove the asparagus and drain well. Transfer to warmed plates, then add the ham. Sprinkle with the chives, garnish with the tarragon and rosemary, and serve.
