Preparation steps

Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/350° F/gas 4. Grease and base line a 23cm round cake tin.

Put the eggs and sugar into a large bowl with the milk and oil and 175g (1 1/2 cups)of the flour. Whisk together until smooth. Pour half the mixture into a separate bowl and stir in 1/2 tsp baking powder and 175g (1 1/2 cups) of the flour. Mix well and set aside.
3.
To the mixture in the other bowl add the cocoa and remaining 100g (3/4 cup) flour and 1/2 tsp baking powder. Mix well.
4.
Spoon two tablespoonfuls of the plain mixture into the centre of the cake tin. Then spoon two tablespoonfuls of the chocolate mixture on top in the centre of the plain mixture. Continue this until all the mixture has been used. There will be lots of rings of mixture in the tin.
5.
Bake for 40–50 minutes until the cake is well risen and a skewer comes out clean when inserted into the centre.
