Maki, Nigiri or Sashimi: Homemade Sushi has long been a good thing for many people. However, it is not possible without the perfect rice. These all-rounders not only provide the sushi base, but also plenty of filling and easily digestible starch. Furthermore, the grain is gluten-free by nature. Rice is therefore ideal for people who cannot tolerate this grain protein.

Sushi rice, in contrast to basmati or jasmine rice, has little of its own aroma. The mild rice vinegar together with some coconut blossom sugar, a pinch of salt and mirin provides a pleasant taste kick. The finished rice then provides the perfect basis for the homemade sushi. 9 ozs Sushi rice
3 Tbsps Rice vinegar
1 Tbsp Mirin
2 tsps sugar
1 tsp salt

1 Pot (with lid), 1 Bowl, 1 Measuring cups, 1 Tablespoon, 1 Teaspoon, 1 Fine-mesh sieve, 1 Kitchen towel, 1 Small pot, 1 Wooden spoon

Preparation steps

Sushi Rice preparation step 1

Rinse sushi rice in a sieve with cold water until water runs clear.  Drain in a fine-mesh sieve for about 20 minutes.

Put the sushi rice with 500 ml (approximately 2 cups) of water in a pot and bring to a boil, uncovered.

Cook for 2 more minutes without lid, then cover and cook an additional 20 minutes.

Remove the pot from heat, remove the lid and cover the sushi rice with a kitchen towel. Allow to sit for 10 minutes.

Combine rice vinegar and mirin with sugar and salt on high heat, stirring until the sugar and salt have dissolved. Place sushi rice in a large bowl to speed cooling and season with the vinegar mixture to taste. Let cool completely. Cover sushi rice with a damp kitchen towel. Serve at room temperature.
