Halve and pit the plums. Cut the plums into wedges. Combine the sugar, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, wine and juice in a saucepan. and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes. Remove cloves, star anise and cinnamon stick.
Add plums and bring to a boil again. Thicken to taste with cornstarch. Simmer for 5 to 8 minutes, until the plums are tender. Serve warm or cold.
