Preparation steps

1.

For the cake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (approximately 350°F). Butter a 25 cm (approximately 10-inch) loaf pan  and sprinkle with breadcrumbs.

2.

Rinse the orange, wipe dry, grate the zest, halve and juice the orange. Cut the marzipan into small pieces. In the bowl of an electric mixer, mix the marzipan with the orange juice until creamy. Melt the butter and alternately add to the marzipan mixture with the sugar. Gradually add the eggs and beat until thick and foamy. Mix the flour with the cornstarch and the baking powder and stir into the batter along with . the ground poppy seeds and the milk. Pour the batter into the pan and smooth the top. Bake on the middle rack of the oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, about 50 minutes.

3.

Remove the cake from the oven, allow to cool briefly in the pan, carefully unmold and cool to lukewarm on a wire rack.

4.

For the glaze: Meanwhile, in a saucepan, bring the sugar, 1 tablespoon water and the orange zest to a boil and cook until syrupy, about 3 minutes. Brush the boiling hot mixture over the still warm cake. Let cool completely and cut into pieces for serving.
