Dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids due to its high cocoa content; these are secondary plant substances that can lower blood pressure and regulate blood sugar levels. The flaked almonds also enrich the marzipan sticks with calcium. This makes bones strong and keeps teeth healthy.

Instead of flaked almonds, the sticks can also be decorated with sliced hazelnuts, for example. In order to keep the marzipan sticks fresh for as long as possible, they should be stored in an airtight container in a cool and dark place.

Preparation steps

1.

Beat egg whites with sugar until stiff. Stir marzipan with rum until smooth. Slowly add to egg whites along with ground almonds. Knead into a moldable dough, cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

2.

Preheat oven to 160°C (approximately 325°F).

3.

Roll dough into a log shape with a 1.5 cm (approximately 1/2 inch) diameter. Cut into 8 cm (approximately 3 inch) pieces. Brush with egg white and roll in sliced almonds. Place on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and bake for about 20 minutes.

4.

Meanwhile, chop chocolate coarsely and melt over a hot, but not boiling, water bath. Cool until lukewarm and dip each cookie into mixture, covering 1 cm (approximately 1/2 inch) on each end. Dry on a wire rack and serve.
