Preparation steps

1.

For the dough, heat butter, sugar and corn syrup in a saucepan and warm over low heat until sugar is dissolved and butter is melted and set aside to cool. Mix flour, baking powder, salt, ginger, cloves and egg in a bowl and add syrup mixture and mix until dough is smooth. If dough is too soft and sticky, add flour, if needed.

2.

On a floured surface, roll out dough about 4 mm (approximately 1/8 inch) thick and cut out tree shapes and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. With a wooden skewer, make holes for hanging. Bake in preheated oven at 180°C (approximately 350°F) (center) for about 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool.

3.

Mix powdered sugar and lemon juice until icing forms and tint icing with desired food coloring. Melt chocolate in a double boiler. Fill two freezer bags, one with melted chocolate and one with icing and cut off small corners of bags for piping. Decorate cookies, as desired with chocolate and icing. Sprinkle sugar over icing and set aside to dry. Thread ribbon through holes to hang as ornaments on Christmas tree.
