100 grams softened butter
100 grams cane sugar
75 grams sugar beet syrup
450 grams Pastry flour
1 teaspoon Baking powder
1 pinch salt
2 teaspoons ginger (ground)
1 generous pinch cloves (ground)
1 egg
2 tablespoons Chocolate sprinkles
For decorating
2 egg whites
1 pinch salt
100 grams powdered sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Preparation steps

Preheat the oven to 180°C (approximately 350°F). Melt the butter, sugar and syrup in a saucepan over medium heat, then knead into a dough with the flour, baking powder, salt, ginger, cloves and egg. Knead in the chocolate sprinkles.

Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and roll out until about 4 mm (approximately 1/8 inch) thick. For each tree, cut out 10 stars of different sizes (each one getting smaller and smaller, with the largest one about 10 cm long - approximately 4 inches) and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 10-15 minutes.

For decorating: beat the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff. Stir in the powdered sugar with the lemon juice and beat until whit and glossy. Spread the egg white mixture on the stars to attach them together, piling the smaller ones on top of the larger ones to form a pine tree shape. Decorate the trees with the remaining egg white mixture as snow.
