How healthy are currants?

All currants are rightly considered healthy. However, blackcurrants have a lot to offer in terms of health: With almost twice as much fibre and about three times as much vitamin C (up to 189 mg/100 g), they are clearly ahead of their lighter siblings. However, those who prefer to eat red and white currants are still doing themselves some good, as they also contain considerable amounts of important nutrients. Diabetics are even better off with red and white currants because of their lower carbohydrate content. However, red and white currants cannot compete with black currants in terms of vitamin A content, as they contain four times as much. However, as blackcurrants taste too tart to most people when raw, they are ideal as a fruity extra for savoury dishes.

Try for example our Salad with glass noodles, cheese and currants or our grilled chicken breast on couscous salad. The sweet and sour berries harmonize perfectly with spicy ingredients. Currants are also a wonderful filling for game and game birds.
