For the dough
1 ½ cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg yolk
1 ⅛ cups butter (diced)
2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
To decorate
4 cups powdered sugar
water
blue Food coloring
edible, silver Bauble

Preparation steps

1.
For the dough: sift the icing sugar into a mixing bowl and beat in the vanilla, egg yolk and butter until well combined.

Sift in the flour and mix to a firm dough. Shape the dough into two flat discs and wrap in cling film. Chill for 30 minutes.
3.
Heat the oven to 190°C (170° fan) 375°F gas 5. Line 2 baking trays with non-stick baking paper.
4.
Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface about 5mm|1/4" thick.

Cut star shapes out of the dough. Re-roll the remaining dough and cut out more stars.
6.
Place the biscuits on the baking trays. Cut out small holes in the top of each star.
7.
Bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden. Place on a wire rack to cool completely.
8.
To decorate: sift the icing sugar into a bowl and beat in enough water to give a smooth thick icing.
9.
Put about a third of the icing into another bowl and stir in a few drops of food colouring until smooth.
10.
Spread some of the biscuits with white icing and some with blue icing. Leave to set.
11.
Put the remaining white icing into a piping bag and pipe snowflake designs on the biscuits. Decorate with silver balls and leave to set.
