Preparation steps

Preheat oven to 180°C (approximately 350°F). Grease springform pan with butter and dust with flour.

For the cake, chop chocolate coarsely, melt over a hot water bath and let cool. Beat butter with sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually stir eggs and chocolate into butter mixture. Mix flour, cocoa, baking powder and almonds and stir into butter mixture alternately with the milk. Pour batter into prepared pan, smooth top and bake until cake tests done with a toothpick, about 40 minutes. Allow cake to cool in pan.

For the caramel, mix sugar with 3-4 tablespoons water and melt, stirring constantly, until dark golden brown. Remove pan from heat, carefully stir in cream, simmer gently and stir until thickened. Remove caramel from the heat, mix in nuts and cranberries and let cool. Remove cake from pan to a serving plate. Pour caramel over cake to serve.
