Preparation steps

1.

For the cake, melt butter with chocolate in a double boiler. Cool slightly. Stir in sugar, salt and vanilla. Gradually stir in egg, then fold in the flour and the nuts.

Line a 28 x 28 cm (approximately 11 x 11 inches) baking pan with parchment paper.

Pour the batter into the pan and smooth the surface. Bake in preheated 180°C (approximately 350°F) oven for about 35 minutes. Cool in the pan.

For the buttercream, slowly bring the cream to a boil. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar in a metal bowl. Gradually whisk in the hot cream. Return the mixture to the pot and cook over low heat while stirring until thickened. Strain through a sieve. Cool to room temperature. Beat the butter until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the cream mixture. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler and stir into the buttercream.

Remove the cake from the pan. Frost the cake with the buttercream. Garnish with Smarties.
