Preparation steps

1.
Beat the butter, sugar and vanilla in a mixing bowl until light and creamy. Beat in the eggs and milk until blended.
2.
Sift in the flour and bicarbonate of soda and stir until smooth, then stir in the walnuts. Chill for 15 minutes until firm enough to roll.

Heat the oven to 190°C (170° fan) 375°F gas 5. Line 2 large baking trays with non-stick baking paper.
4.
Mix together the sugar and spices in a shallow bowl. Roll tablespoonfuls of the mixture into walnut-sized balls, then roll in the sugar mixture.
5.
Place on the baking trays, about 5cm|2" apart and flatten slightly. Bake for about 10 minutes until golden. Cool on the baking trays for a few minutes, then place on a wire rack to cool completely.
