Outside the season for fresh berries, you can also prepare the casserole with frozen fruit or other seasonal fruit without any problems.

3 ½ ozs Currants (red and black)
2 ozs small Strawberries (or raspberries)
3 ozs softened butter
1 tsp lemon zest
9 ozs milk
1 Tbsp Orange blossom water
3 eggs
3 ozs sugar
8 slices white bread (or toast)

Preparation steps

Rinse the berries and pat dry. Hull the strawberries.

Preheat the oven to 400°F and grease a baking dish with a little butter.

Bring the milk, lemon zest, and orange water to a boil and then cool. Beat the eggs with 2 ounces sugar and stir into the milk. Cut the bread slices in half. Melt the butter and whisk into the batter. Dip the bread slices in the egg-milk mixture and arrange in layers in the buttered baking dish. Distribute the berries over the bread and in the gaps between slices. Pour the remaining egg-milk mixture over the whole thing and sprinkle with the remaining sugar. Bake for about 25 minutes. Serve warm.
