Apple Cake with Caramel Sauce
Preheat the oven to 180°C (approximately 350°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Separate the eggs. Beat the egg whites with 1 pinch of salt until stiff and sprinkle in the sugar. Stir together the butter, the powdered sugar and the egg yolks until creamy. Stir in the lemon juice. Mix and stir in the flour and baking powder. Fold in the egg whites. Pour batter into the pan. Peel the apples and cut into very thin slices. Lay the apple slices next to each other on the batter. Bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes. Let cake cool.
For the caramel sauce, heat the sugar in a saucepan. Only stir when sugar begins to melt at the edge, then stir slowly but constantly. When sugar is completely dissolved, pour in 4 tablespoons of water one at a time, blend well and pour the caramel over the cooled cake. Cut into small squares and serve immediately.
