Preparation steps

1.

For the cake: Beat the butter until fluffy. Add the egg yolks and water. Stir in the flour and baking powder and mix until smooth.

2.

Wrap in plastic and chill for about 30 minutes.

3.

Mix together the ground almonds with the powdered sugar. Beat the egg whites with the lemon juice.

4.

For the filling: Fold the almonds and sugar into the egg whites. The filling should be easy to spread. If it is too dry, add 1 more egg or 2 tablespoons of water.

5.

Roll approximately 2/3 of the dough and line the greased springform pan with the dough, forming a 2-3 cm (approximately 1 inch) high edge.

6.

Spread the almond filling evenly over it.

7.

Roll the rest of the dough out thinly. Cut out stars and stripes. Decorate the cake with the stars and stripes (see picture). Brush with the beaten egg and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (approximately 350°F) for 45- 50 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and then cool in the pan. Turn out from the mold and let finish cooling. To serve, cut int slices.
